When I was planning on starting a blog the idea of self-hosting seemed very tech and honestly intintimated me, and that’s a hard thing to do. However, as with my nature, I research the heck out of something until I know all aspects. I lived for research papers in college. Through my research and experience I can tell you that SiteGround is the best choice to host your blog.
At first I wasn’t sure it mattered to much. I was wondering if the difference was more of personal preference like Pepsi or Coke. And then I was leaning towards the hosting company I first heard of. HOwever, once I started digging into how important hosting actually is I knew I had to get to the bottom of the debate.
I will help to clarify some of the techs terms as well, yet keeping this article simple and to the point. Running a self-hosted blog really doesn’t require a whole lot of tech knowledge.
1.) SITEGROUND HAS THE BEST UPTIME
Uptime is the time the server has stayed up and running. If ther server is down than your site is down and if your site is down you lose visitors and/or customers.
SiteGround has 99.99% Uptime. I have never had an issue on any of my sites and I run four one my one account. This is another plus which I’ll address later.
2.) FASTER IS BETTER
The Loading speed of your site can make or break it. Today everything is about speed. If one page is taking too long to load another page is just a click away. When tested SiteGround has an average loading time of 1.3 seconds with cache. While the industry average is 4.7. her are the leading host site when it comes to speed. I had originally planned on bluhost because that was the first host company I saw advertised as it has been around for a longtime. However, recently there has been many complaints but the slowness of Bluhost and that was all I needed to stay away.
3.) LEADER IN SECURITY
SiteGround has been leading the competeion in staying update with the lastest and most secure technology. I have yet to have an issue. They make security a priority and it really shows. Among the things they do are:
•By default, they have set all servers to use the latest PHP 7 version with the latest security fixes.
•They are running Apache in a chrooted environment with suExec.
•They have sophisticated IDS/IPS systems which block malicious bots and attackers.
•ModSecurity is installed on all of their shared servers and they update their security rules weekly, thus protecting our customers from the most common attacks.
4.) CUSTOMER SERVICE
This is one of my favorite aspects of their service. You don’t need to call anyone you can send your issue to them directly from the site, get a response super fast, see a picture of who you are talking to and get a resolution in minutes.
The average time they post I believe is 15 mintites whole most people wait more than 30 miniatures with Bluhost and with poor quality service,
I have had issues, usually because I did something wrong like putting a typo in my addon domain name. I needed help at 4am because I’m that person who works at late (early?) hours. I had a truly helpful technician come to my rescue in minutes. It was a silly mistake on my part yet he didn’t make me feel stupid for it, which I greatly appreciated.
When it comes to customer service we have all had that nightmare phone call were we can’t get any help or anyone who cares. That is not the case with SiteGround You’ll get assistance in minutes and they won’t stop until the problem is fully resolved. I can testify to that.
I was expecting SiteGround to be priced being the leading Hosting site in the industry. With the speed, security, service I was willing to pay more, my pocket book was not. However, I was pleasantly pleased to see not only are they more affordable than Bluhost, they don’t pull any surprise punches.
With Bluhost you have to purchase 3 years of service ahead of time to get the low price they advertise. With SiteGround you do not. Every service makes you pay for a year in advance.
As of the plublishing date of the article you can register your domain name, domain privacy, and SG Site Scanner is a monitoring service that checks your website daily and immediately notifies you if your website has been hacked or injected with malicious code with the basic Startup plan for $97.
The have three plans to choose from
StartUp is the basic plan. It is great for small to medium sites.
GrowBig is the next plan. This is my recommendation. While I have seen many other bloggers recommend Startup I really think GrowBig is the way to go. You want to succeed. You are going to get the big traffic. Also, you may love blogging so much you want to start a second one, with GrowBig you don’t have to pay for separate hosting, just the domain registration. I have four accounts and love it. You can get a year of service for $120, domain included in the price.
GoGeek is the the top level. It has all the eateries you could dream of. I will actually be switching to this one soon.
Each level lets you know how much traffic is best suited for the plan, which is extremely helpful as the other hosting sites do not give you these specs, nor do they give you the option to have more than one site per hosting plan.
6.) Ease of Use
SiteGround is extremely user friendly. even if you minimal experience you will not have a problem finding your way around their site. You can access your WordPress blog directly from their site, you can manage your emails and security from cPanel. cPanel is the hosting control panel. It is where you will go to download WordPress. When I first heard about self-hosting I thought it would be so much more work than it is. It’s truly been a breeze. SiteGround has a beautiful layout and, as mentioned above, a great staff to help you with any problem.
7.) OFFICALLY RECOMMENDED BY WORDPRESS, THE LEADING BLOG PLATFORM
What more can you say when even WordPress thinks they are the best?
At the end of the day SiteGround has the speed, security, service and dependability you need when you are running a blog or business. You need to be able to know your site is going to be up, secure and load so fast you never lose a single customer due to slowness. They stay update and are leading the industry of hosting.
I’d love to hear from you. If you have any questions please feel free to post them. I have gone through a LOT of trail and error and learned many things the had way. I’d love to help you!
