Life is crazy! Am I right? we have so much going on. The world seems to be going even more crazy by the day. We often balance work, families, a social life and a ton of other things unique to our situations. Having a specific space set aside for prayer and reading allows your mind to decompress. I add reading because we read the Bible, we read our devotional, and we often read soothing novels and we don’t always have room to create separate prayer space and reading space.
The mind reacts to visual triggers. I read once that scientists had said when you wake up and the first thing your look at is flowers it helps you feel more energized throughout the day. Having a designated space to go to when you need to pray and study the Bible helps your brain switch the that mode.
You need that space to be alone with Jesus during those really tough times when you feel like you might fall apart. You need it for those times when you just want to talk to Jesus and grow your relationship. Setting apart a place in your house I feel is significant. It places priority on prayer and also helps you to remember to take time specifically for prayer.
It doesn’t have to be a big space. I know all about having tight living conditions. Here are some helpful tips:
- Find a corner in your room, search thrift stores for a comfy chair and maybe small side table
- Get a nice throw or afghan
- Hang a nice piece of art. Something Bible inspired, or a beautiful landscape
- Place your devotional and Bibles in your corner
- Have a specific mug
- You can go old fashion and have a CD player and some Christian CDs hands. No need o have your phone or take around to distract you
- A smoothing candle and a comfy pair of slippers
- Pray for Jesus to bless your space and your time spent there
My ideal space would be a calzone bay window set with drawers underneath and a small bookshelf built into it.
The main focus of prayer should always be on Jesus and praising him. Prayer can be done anywhere. It doesn’t need a special space. He, as you grow as a Christian you will find yourself praying more, maybe you’re called to be an intercessor. Prayer can move mountains and the Bible is full of the promises prayer brings. Having a prayer space is an added benefit to our lives. The more you pray the more you will want a quiet place to go. Many preachers speak of their prayer closets, and some people actually go in their closet.
Lastly, I suggest praying over your space and anointing it with oil. You want it to be a special space devoted to your communion with God and set apart.
I know my life is crazy and how much I hold onto throughout the day and how much having a tiny comforting space can help me. relax and calm my mind.
I would love to see pictures of your spaces.
